This week the Nenagh Guardian wrote about the Silvermines Men’s Shed woodcarving exhibition in Nenagh Library which recently launched in Nenagh Library. The Men’s Shed movement, which started in Australia in the 1980’s and quickly spread internationally, is extremely popular in Ireland. With 450 around the country, we now have more Sheds per capita than any other country in the world. There are 5 Men’s Sheds in North Tipperary, each of whom are engaged in a wide variety of activities such as woodwork, crafts, computers, DIY, music/singing and genealogy. They also take part in different community projects, in a relaxed and informal setting as above all else, the Shed is a social space where all are welcome and everyone who attends can be involved at their own pace. In fact it could be said that the most important tool in the Shed is the kettle!
The North Tipperary Development Company (NTDC) have a dedicated Men’s Sheds Support Worker to work with Sheds in the region. Currently they are run in Borrisokane, Nenagh, Silvermines, Thurles and Littleton.
